Area Code Listing, by Number. The cities listed with each area code are the major cities for that area code; this originated as the city in which the switch computer for that area code is located, but is no longer the case. The cities listed are not intended to be exhaustive.
In 1947, 34 states plus D.C. had only a single area code each; Alaska and Hawaii were not yet states, and were not included in the initial area code assignments. In 2010, only 10 of those 34, plus D.C., Alaska, and Hawaii, have single codes. This map shows the original area code boundaries, established in 1947.
