Johann Sebastian Bach, Soundtrack: Minority Report. Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685, in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany, into a large and distinguished family of professional musicians. His father, named Johann Ambrosius Bach, was a violinist and trumpeter, employed by the city of Eisenach. "Air on the G String" is August Wilhelmj's arrangement of the second movement in Johann Sebastian Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068. The arrangement differs from the original in that the part of the first violins is transposed down so that it can be played entirely on a violin's lowest string, i.e., the G string. It is played by a single violin (instead of by the first violins as a group).
The big opportunity with the Air on a G String (Bach titled it just "Air", and the "on a G String" was added later and has become common) is in the phrasing and expression. This piece is a joy to work through. We can craft the connection of each note to the next, and form a sweeping journey from beginning to end.
